North Karelia's Delicious Countryside Company of the Year 2022

Amidst the summer's busyness, our spirits were warmed by the honor of receiving the Delicious Countryside award, which was presented at the Mikkeli Farmari Fair in July 2022, but which we were unable to attend to receive.

We received recognition for these reasons...

In Parppeinvaara poetry village in Ilomantsi, the characteristic features of Karelian culture come together: kantele music, handicrafts, Orthodoxy, and traditional foods. Parppeinvaara also showcases war history and the nature of Ilomantsi with its animals. Marjo Niiranen, owner and hostess of Parppeinpirtti Restaurant, collaborates well with other operators in the Poetry Village to develop and promote Karelian food culture. The interior design and staff attire of Parppeinpirtti include Karelian and bird-patterned linen products, manufactured by a local entrepreneur. The dishes are made from local ingredients. Rye comes from the slopes of Parppeinvaara.

"Delicious Countryside is an annual recognition award given to companies, launched by the Women's Rural Advisory Organisation during Finland's 100th anniversary. This provincial award highlights the wonderful flavors, ingredients, food businesses, and culinary treasures of the countryside.

Finnish countryside, with its producers and businesses, offers high-quality raw materials and foodstuffs to industry, trade, and consumers alike.

With the Delicious Countryside recognition, MKN highlights Finnish food, its producers, and the heroic stories behind Finnish food. At the same time, people are encouraged to favor local food, use the services of Finnish producers and businesses, organize joint events around food, utilize nature's offerings, and enjoy food outdoors.

The theme of 'Heroic Stories of Finnish Food' emphasizes Finnish food culture with its events and regional attractions. We give a face to food makers and the thanks they deserve, facilitate the creation of heroic stories of Finnish food, and increase the appreciation of Finnish food.

To select the Delicious Countryside companies, consumers were asked for suggestions from the regions for the most delicious rural businesses, producers, processors, food service companies, and other food experience providers in villages and municipalities. From these suggestions, regional juries selected the winner.

In selecting the Delicious Countryside company, the following factors were emphasized, among others:

• The deliciousness, experiential quality, and innovativeness of products and services.
• The company's desire to develop and innovate.
• The company's ability to network and collaborate.
• The impact of the company's operations on the vitality and visibility of the countryside and the surrounding community.
• The company pays attention to sustainable development, environmental values, and circular economy opportunities.

The Delicious Countryside recognition awards were given to companies at the Farmari Fair in Mikkeli on Friday, July 1."
